portrait of a turkish lady. i saw her sitting at those doorsteps and i just liked the way she was sitting there and enjoying the good weather. so i wanted to ask her if i could take her picture, but she didn't speak much french. i though she'd never give me permission, but in the end she understood what i wanted to do(yay for body language!) and i could take some pictures
background info about the Schaarbeek.DOC series
i made this picture for a school assignment. we had to make a portrait series about people living in Schaarbeek. Schaarbeek was divided into zones and everybody got a zone in which he had to make portraits. Lucky as i always am *cough*, i got the zone with the red light district and Turkey(as i often call it.. it feels as if you walk somewhere on the streets in Turkey; so many typical turkish stores, turkish people and every nationality other than belgian. i swear.. you'll have a hard time to find someone with the belgian nationality over there. not that i really care about that, but it's just so much harder to convince them to have their picture taken. they either don't trust you or they only speak turkish, bulgarian, armenian,...). it wasn't easy to find four people, but i succeeded in the end
all of my pictures even got selected for the Schaarbeek.DOC exposition. some images: (not mine!)
how much was the school then? were the tuition costs too high or the expenses you had on the cameras and material? anyway, once you'll have money coming in you'll be able to get on with what you like to do. maybe not in a school, but that sure won't lessen the fun.
the expenses on material were too high... everything's still analogue on our school(which is great fun, but it's pretty expensive after a while). the last months, we had to print most pictures on 30x40 or 40x50(so that's respectively about 70 euro and 100 euro for a pack of 50 papers :-/). i couldn't do a weekend job, because i was always so busy with school.. so it's pretty impossible to always find money after a while...
wow, i understand. that's a load of money you'd need, puts quite some pressure on you. i wonder why they wouldn't allow digital where possible to help the students to save money and then limit darkroom and film. i guess some people would kill me for saying that. but then again you can't ignore the student's finances. oh well, you'll manage otherwise as well.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
